Curating Curiosity and Catalyst Questions in Early Maths and Language Development through Continuous Provision

It Started With A Stick can re-ignite a love for learning, for children and adults alike; not only that but it actively promotes catalyst questioning and embeds effective early maths skills – almost without them noticing!


What do scientists do to learn about new things? They play. They question, they investigate. These are skills which, if we introduce while they are young, will last our children for life; and we have the opportunity to develop these through curating our continuous provision. Even better, if we plan this approach carefully, we can still follow the children’s lead while building in opportunities to promote language development, effective questioning and early maths skills that they will love and will last!

Curiosity is an endangered aspect of our learning in Early Years and Key Stage One. With more structure and higher expectations being imposed on schools and settings and more and more children being stuck to screens. This innovative way of curating our continuous provision will rekindle the children’s curiosity – and ours.

Language development is currently an area of concern, with many children having experienced a very different kind of childhood; they often struggle to find the words to describe what they are learning, let alone understanding how they learn (metacognition). This innovative approach also actively engages parent partnership – that must be a plus!

Practitioners and teachers will really understand why they are offering particular equipment and experiences and they will be empowered to ask appropriate, effective catalyst questions to help them dive deeper into what has provoked the children’s curiosity and what they already understand. Balancing the children’s development, against the directed demands of the curriculum is always a struggle, but this approach helps us to balance the two for every individual. We often are overwhelmed by the resources we have, or do not feel we have the resources we need. Using everyday objects, easily accessible this innovative approach makes learning limitless and lasting.


Outcomes

  • Develop a bank of simple, sustainable strategies to promote language development and early maths through continuous provision
  • Explain why what we are offering through our intent, learning environment and implementation really makes an impact
  • Explain what effective physical development looks like and how we can balance the needs of the curriculum with what we know is best practice for that particular child
  • Be empowered to ask effective questions, challenge choices and to empower the children to ask effective questions as they are exploring and investigating
  • Be inspired to curate curiosity by starting with simple, effective starting points
